hai all.. i'm having a problem with installation IRAF on Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala). i have followed this instruction from the web: http://geco.phys.columbia.edu/~rubab/iraf/iraf_step_by_step_installationbut when i get into this command, i have a following message:
[code:1:1976fe9aef]iraf@ichwan-desktop% setenv iraf /iraf/iraf/
iraf@ichwan-desktop% cd $iraf/unix/hlib
iraf@ichwan-desktop% source irafuser.csh
iraf@ichwan-desktop% sudo ./install
[sudo] password for iraf:
iraf is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
[/code:1:1976fe9aef]
i can't continue to installing the IRAF.
what is the meaning of this problem? so what should i do to fixing this problem?
just another info, i have 2 HDD in my computer, both HDD set to primary HDD, and one of the HDD detected by ubuntu have a bad sector. is the installation problem occured because of this bad sector on my HDD?
thank you for your kindness to answer my question and help me fixing the problem..
best regard..

Root permission is needed to run the install script, you need to either 'su root' and become the root user, or the 'sudo' command will execute the command as the root user provided you have permission to use it (apparently you don't). As 'root' you can use the 'visudo' command to add yourself to the sudoers file, but as long as you're the root user you might as well run the install script.

thank you for the reply..
unfortunately, i don't know how to get into root because there is no option to make the root account when i first installing this ubuntu (eventhough i know that root is automatically created), and i didn't put a password on root account.
the first account when i have to make when installing the ubuntu is the 'ichwan' account. nothing else..so how i get into the root account when i didn't put a password, but the su root is asking for the password?

The error message is asking for the 'iraf' account password, meaning 'iraf' probably isn't in the sudoers file. Try running the install script as 'ichwan' with the sudo command (after similarly setting the environment). The install script only needs to be run once, not every time you login to the CL and you won't normally be using the iraf account anyway (i.e. login as yourself).-Mike

thanks for the reply..
i am doing it right now.. but i have a problem. i can't setting the environment and have a following message:
[code:1:6b0b1a8e64]ichwan@ichwan-desktop:~/IRAF/irafbin/noao.bin.linux$ sudo apt-get install setenvReading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package setenv
[/code:1:6b0b1a8e64]
i try to search what setenv equivalent in ubuntu, and i found export command, so i did this:
[code:1:6b0b1a8e64]ichwan@ichwan-desktop:~/IRAF/irafbin/noao.bin.linux$ export IRAF /home/ichwan/IRAF/
bash: export: `/home/ichwan/IRAF/': not a valid identifier
[/code:1:6b0b1a8e64]
but it still can not setting the environment.. what should i do then?i'm sorry for bothering you a lot because of my question..
thank you for your kindness..

There is no 'apt-get' for install, however you WILL need to be running a C-shell. Try[code:1:2f3723afec]
ichwan% csh
csh> setenv iraf /iraf/iraf/
csh> cd $iraf/unix/hlib
csh> source irafuser.csh
csh> sudo ./install
...answer the install script prompts
csh> exit
[/code:1:2f3723afec]It looks like 'bash' is your normal shell so type 'csh' to start a C-shell, then follow the directions, the 'exit' will leave the C-shell when you are done.
