I'm installing a private version of iraf v2.16.1 on a linux 64-bit system. With the simple install, I don't get X11iraf. If I go into the vendor directory and do make, I can get the xgterm executable in the bin directory. However, when I execute it, I get the following message:
xgterm Xt error: Can't open display: localhost:29.0
I'm at a new institute with all new systems, so I'm not surprised to have a few problems!

I assume that by 'private version' you mean a personal install, and not some private source tree, right? If so, then the personal install script should still install links to the X11IRAF tools in your $HOME/.iraf/bin directory, however you might need to the source your .login/.cshrc/.bashrc (and/or issue a 'rehash' command if you use C-shell) to pick up the new commands right away. Can you verify the $HOME/.iraf directory was created with the proper links?
The display problem can happen when you login from a remote machine and don't have X11 forwarding enabled. On the client side you need to ssh into the machine using the '-X' (and sometimes '-Y') flag so the display is forwarded. This assumes that forwarding is enabled in the ssh server, but that's common. Also be sure you have done an "xhost +" on your local machine to allow remote machines to display windows.

Yes, I did mean 'personal install'.
There are links to a number of things in ./iraf/bin:
cl generic mkmlist rmbin rpp sgidispatch voclient.jar wtar xpp
ecl mkiraf mkpkg rmfiles rtar vocl voclientd xc xyacc
But not xgterm.
I am running csh in case that's important.
I tried some more with the executable /home/duvall/iraf/vendor/x11iraf/bin.linux/xgterm and still get
_X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't get address for localhost
xgterm Xt error: Can't open display: localhost:29.0
I've tried various combinations of xhost + and ssh -X
I'll talk to some people at this end ...
Thanks.

I did download the beta version mentioned in the previous discussion and it does work. So, I'll use that.
Thanks for your help.
