I am new to IRAF and Linux and could not find a reference to this in another string. I hope this is not repetitive. I installed iraf v2.14.1 on a 64 bit Dell laptop running ubuntu 9.10. got past the no ptys problem but when I ran sysinfo It stopped at the STSDAS check in the external package section with the following message:Number of declared packages: 4
Number of logical directories: 4Checking packages ... Package Path Helpdb Binaries Date
------- ---- ------ -------- ----
noao [ OK ] [ OK ] [ OK ] 15:43 /iraf/iraf/noao//bin.linux/x_apphot.e bin.linux
guiapps [ OK ] [ OK ] [ OK ] 15:48 /iraf/extern/guiapps//bin.linux/x_xhelp.e bin.linux
[ OK ] 15:45 /iraf/extern/guiapps//bin.alpha/OBJS.arc.Z bin.alpha
[ OK ] 15:45 /iraf/extern/guiapps//bin.freebsd/x_spectool.e bin.freebsd
[ OK ] 15:48 /iraf/extern/guiapps//bin.hp700/x_xhelp.e bin.hp700
[ OK ] 15:45 /iraf/extern/guiapps//bin.macosx/x_spectool.e bin.macosx
[ OK ] 15:21 /iraf/extern/guiapps//bin.redhat/x_xapphot.e bin.redhat
[ OK ] 15:25 /iraf/extern/guiapps//bin.sparc/x_xapphot.e bin.sparc
[ OK ] 15:20 /iraf/extern/guiapps//bin.ssun/x_xapphot.e bin.ssun
[ OK ] 15:45 /iraf/extern/guiapps//bin.sunos/x_spectool.e bin.sunos
[ OK ] 15:48 /iraf/extern/guiapps//bin.suse/x_xhelp.e bin.suse
stsdas [ OK ]Word too long.It is finding the path but then doesn't like something it is finding. Is the word too long related to a 64 bit instruction set machine and will STSDAS work or do I have to make a correction of some kind?

I haven't looked at the sysinfo script in a while, but there appear to be a number of other errors that need to be fixed. The message you report is coming from the shell and means some string being used is too long, this is a bug in the sysinfo script and not your installation.Sysinfo isn't required for anything other than information. Are you having some other specific problem you were using this for?

Thanks,As far as I can tell, I used the same sysinfo.sh script when loading iraf v2.12 on the same machine and did not receive this message. I have not edited the sysinfo.sh script and have no idea what could have changed, and I un-installed v2.12 before loading 2.14.1.I was using sysinfo as a check on the installation. normally if it runs through with no errors or warnings, the installation is OK.
