Dear all,
I am a beginner in IRAF installation.
It seems I succeded to install IRAF however, after having installed xgterm (from the http://iraf.noao.edu/new_stuff/xgterm_fedora.html link), when I type
xgterm &, the answer is:
-bash: /usr/local/bin/xgterm: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: bad ELF interpreter: Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type
Any idea of what is going on?
Thank you for your help!

Try using the binary at https://iraf.net/ftp/pub/xgterm.LNUX.STATIC The other link is a much older version (apparently of the wrong type).

Dear fitz,it worked properly, thank you very much!
I however have another problem: I succeeded in making the login.cl file, but when launching cl in the xgterm window, it appears the following:ERROR: Abnormal termination of child process 'bin$x_system.e'
called as: `cl ()'
Error while reading login.cl file - may need to rebuild with mkiraf
Fatal startup error. CL dies.I re-did the mkiraf command, but this message persists... may be a new topic is necessary?Thank you very much, Philippe.

An 'abnormal termination' message means the binary couldn't start for some reason (wrong binary type, a missing shared lib on your system, etc). To find out, execute the command outside of iraf as e.g.[code:1:2f5b754c20]% /iraf/iraf/unix/bin.redhat/x_system.e[/code:1:2f5b754c20]You'll either see a host error message (please post it) or a ">" prompt meaning it started up okay (type "bye" to exit).

It seems I have a big problem: the file x_system.e does not exist:here is the content of the /iraf/iraf/unix/bin.redhat directory:alloc.e f2c.1.gz f2c.h libboot.a libf2c.a mkpkg.e rmfiles.e rtar.e sgi2uapl.e sgi2uhpgl.e sgi2uimp.e sgi2uqms.e sgidispatch.e xc.e xyacc.e
f2c.1 f2c.e generic.e libcompat.a libos.a rmbin.e rpp.e sgi2gif.e sgi2ueps.e sgi2uhplj.e sgi2uptx.e sgi2xbm.e wtar.e xpp.eTo install IRAF, I followed the procedure indicated here:
http://student.dcu.ie/~reynols7/iraf.htmland everything seemed to be correct...

My bad, the path is "/iraf/iraf/bin.redhat", i.e. no "/unix" in the path. Mondays....

Dear Fitz,
sorry, I should have noticed that.
In any case, I have the same error message than the one with xgterm:
[root@ishtar bin.redhat]# ./x_system.e
bash: ./x_system.e: /lib/ld-linux.so.2: bad ELF interpreter: Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type
Does it mean the binary file is wrong?
Best regards, Philippe.

See the post about a similar problem at https://iraf.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=89379&highlight=elf+interpreterNote I'm assuming you're running a recent version such as v2.14 (which seems to be what the instructions you used would do).
