If you type in IRAF the follwing command: cl>page onedstds$README (more info is given under "help standard")you can also have a look here: http://stsdas.stsci.edu/cgi-bin/gethelp.cgi?onedstdsscrolling down you would see a list of standard stars. I would like to know their spectral type. Does anyone who where to find? In the beginning of the text there are few papers referenced but I could not get all of the sptral types. The tedious process is to type of each star name in SIMBAD, but I am sure there is a list somewhere which has the spectral type! :-) Thanks in advance.

If you create a list with one object per line you can submit an entire catalog to SIMBAD to get the spectral type (at least for some/most of the names). For the rest you may need to track down the paper.-Mike

Thanks Mike! I know this is not a SIMBAD forum, but I thought you might be able to help me. Emailing SIMBAD have had no response! You suggested that I create a file with objects whose spectral type I need. I created such a file with one object per line. Saved it as a txt file. Uploaded it in SIMBAD. But I get errors. All the objects are identified by SIMBAD when I type in their identifiers individually. Thanks for your help! Here are the contents of the file: hr718
hr3454
hr3982

Hi Trillian,How exactly were you uploading these to SIMBAD? I tried the 'by identifier' page at http://simbad.u-strasbg.fr/simbad/sim-fid and under the 'Query a list of identifiers' section I uploaded the sample file you posted and it came back just fine (showing M31 as having no spectral type). Not every identifier in the lists will be recognized, perhaps you just tried it during a glitch in the system?Cheers,
-Mike

Hi Mike, Thanks for your reply. There is no mention in the help section on SIMBAD that one can ONLY use an ASCII file and not a RTF. I created my data using Textedit application on the mac. Even though I created a target.rtf and later changed it to .txt, I got the same error. I moved to Windows did the same using Notepad and it worked fine!
