 "cl" doesn't work!

Hi there,
I hope you can help me. I successfully FTPed HPUX/IRAF v2.9 from your archives,
registered it, and installed it on our HP Apollo 720. The "install" script
seemed to run smoothly, as did the "mkiraf" task; .login and login.cl files
were created, and so on. But when I tried to start it up with "cl", it gave
the following two messages:/users/irafbin.hppa/cl.e not found
if: Empty if.What has gone wrong? I installed the iraf account as /users/iraf/, and
because /irafbin.hppa is not a user-account, it should not reside in /users !
Or if this is just a default location, why was the default not changed to
a real location for our site by the "install" process?
( As it happens, no such /users/irafbin.hppa directory was created in the
process of installation anyway - so the "cl" obviously can't work ).I can find nothing in your installation/site managing documentation which
throws any light on this problem, so I hope you can advise me on what to do.--

Hello Ray, The messages you report are caused in part by syntax errors in the
file hlib$cl.csh. The "empty if" message is caused by a missing "then"
statement at line 60. Once this is fixed, a subsequent error "too many
parentheses" will be reported unless you also remove the extra ")" from the
setenv statement that follows at line 61 of hlib$cl.csh: # Determine the architecture to be used.
...
else if ("$MACH" == "hppa") # missing "then"
setenv IRAFARCH "hppa") # extra ")"However, there is something else going on. This message: /users/irafbin.hppa/cl.e not foundmeans there is a missing trailing slash in your definition of the iraf
root. You must have it defined (for this account - the iraf account?) as
/users/iraf instead of /users/iraf/. The cl executable is in the bin.hppa
subdirectory of the iraf root, /users/iraf/bin.hppa. Most likely, you
defined the iraf root with an explicit setenv command and just left off
the trailing slash before attempting to start the CL. There are other
possibilities, but I won't elaborate on those unless I hear from you that
the problem continues. We apologize for the problems caused by the syntax error. Write back with
more questions or for more help with this problem, if this mail doesn't
lead to the solution.Suzanne Jacoby

Hi Ray, Glad the installation is sorted out now. Look in the ~ftp/iraf/doc
directory on iraf.noao.edu for the latest IRAF documentation. There's a
README file that describes the contents of the directory. Most documents
are in compressed PostScript format. Notice you can get back issues of
the IRAF Newsletter as well from the archive.Suzanne
