Don,
I'm afraid I can't help you much with your port effort beyond what's
in that IRIX cover letter. I would just start stepping through the letter,
examining the directories and files discussed, and attempt compiling when
appropriate, gaining experience as you go. I would also keep in mind that
it is still possible you'd be better off finding another solution rather
than spending much time on what could after all be a huge time sink with
a doubtful outcome. IRAF should run on any of the DECstations. A typical single-user
configuration of any modern workstation would have 16MB memory, 600 or
more MB disk, 8 bit color. If not on a network which has a means for
backup, you would need something like an 8mm Exabyte or 4mm DAT, though
I don't know about these on decstations). You could get by with a TK50
cartridge in a pinch (everyone hates them); you might have to get one
to receive DEC software distributions, though they are probably converting
to CDROMs like everyone else -- in which case you'd have to get one of
those. A laser printer is desirable as well. The C compiler is bundled,
but you would need to buy Fortran assuming you'd be doing development. Also, it would be a good idea to send future mail like this to
iraf@noao.edu, as I am not always around to answer mail.Steve
