Fred, perhaps this reply sent yesterday didn't reach you; I just got a
new copy of your original query. Also, I see you were copied on some
mail from cliff (cal?) about setting the environment variable DISPLAY,

Did you ever try increasing the swap size? The effect you describe,
no freeze when only the xserver is running on ICENEB, is consistent with a
swap space problem (when iraf and the saoimage client are also running on
