I'm having problems reading and writing 8mm tapes on our Sun 4
running SunOS 4.1.1 and IRAF 2.9.1. I have installed the patch,
sos4.patch3.Z, and wonder if there is anything else I need to do.
The tapes are blocked (28800-byte) FITS tapes, and they can be read
just fine on the 8mm drive on our Decstation 5000 by rfits. Do
you have any suggestions?-Doug (mink@cfa.harvard.edu)

Doug, You probably installed the patch correctly. You should have unpacked
the sos4.patch3.Z file and retrieved the binaries from sos4.ib.spc and
sos4.nb.spc to install it correctly. The 8mm tapes are not supported on all
Sun configurations; here's an accumulating list of such devices on OS 4.1.1
Sun-4's running IRAF V2.9.1: machine tape rfits wfits
------- ---- ----- ----
sun4/65 exabyte works fails
sun4/370 exabyte works works
sun4/470 exabyte fails works
sun4/490 exabyte fails works
sun4/490 1/2" front-load scsi (HP) fails failsIt is differences (e.g., bugs) in the various drivers that make this
support so complex. The real solution to the problem will be the
configurable mtio interface available with IRAF V2.10.Suzanne
