Jeannette asked me to answer your query about IRAF on a 486 based system.
No, there are no plans at this time to port IRAF to any 486 UNIX platform,
and of course not to any DOS based system. It is probably technically
possible to do such a port to an appropriately configured system, but it's
a lot of work to purchase and integrate all the extra things you need that
don't come with the generic machine (plenty of extra memory, disk, UNIX,
compilers, X window system, etc.), and then you probably have a one of a kind
system that would be quite difficult to maintain and support. Ports and
their subsequent maintenance and support are sufficiently difficult that
one wants a lot of leverage, i.e. a lot of identical systems out there. So
far we haven't seen this kind of thing in that market.Steve Rooke (iraf@noao.edu)
