A quick question: Will IRAF VMS work with an 8mm tape drive?
I expected it to, but the recent newsletter suggests it might not.
I was about to put IRAF on a new VAXstation w/8mm drive this weekend.
Do you know if there is a simple workaround for getting FITS data
from the drive? Such as copying FITS from tape to disk then reading
with IRAF? - Thanks,

Tony, a quick answer: we don't know! Probably vms/iraf won't work with an
8mm drive, but that's just because of our experiences on other systems. If
somehow VMS sees it as the same kind of drive as 9 track (e.g. it can backspace
file and record, doesn't flip out on reaching EOT, etc.), then it ought to
work, and would be a matter of editing dev$devices. Good luck, and let us
know what happens.Nigel wants me to ask you what's happening at your end with Multinet?Steve

Tony, thanks for the report. I can't think of any other tests at the
moment, but perhaps Jeannette might when she gets back the middle of this
week. Meanwhile, it's nice to get some cheery news once in a while, thanks!Steve
