Mark,
The IRAF port to the Sun 386i is in the latter stages of completion,
testing and debugging; it hasn't quite gone into beta tests yet. It doesn't
appear that there will be any serious problems. We recommend 8 Mb main memory,
and plenty of disk if it is to be a standalone system, e.g. 327 Mb. Note that
the 386i has swapped bytes like a VAX, and that this includes the IEEE
floating point format, so binary files cannot in general be shared directly
between a Sun 386i and other Suns.Steve Rooke

Mark,
I was just informed that 386i/IRAF went into beta test last week, so the
port itself is complete. We still have some optimizations to do, like taking
advantage of shared libraries, but we need to do that anyway for all Suns
under SunOS4.0. I am told that 8 Mb memory is a MINIMUM. The 386i under
4.0 is a real memory hog due to the virtual files system, and more memory
is definitely desirable.Steve
