Hi. I'm Mark Slovak at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. I'm in
the process of (finally!!) trying to bring up IRAF in a serious way on our
VAX 11/780 but I'm having some trouble. The problem is when I try to use
the FITS tape routines in 'dataio'. In particular, I can't seem to get IRAF
to recognize our tape drives. Below is the devices. file that I modified
for our system, which has two Kennedy drives and a Cipher GRC CacheTape (a
streamer device):# DEVICES -- Device allocation table. [VMS/IRAF]

# irafname device name in iraf (incl density if magtape)

msa.6250 MSA0: 6250--------------------------------------------------------In IRAF, when I use the 'allocate' command, the tape is mounted properly
but when I try 'devstatus msc' all that is returned is 'device msc is
allocated' and use of 'mtexamine msc' produces: Error reading file: msc
and Warning: OPEN: File does not exist (msc).Can you look at our installation and see what I botched up? I've
got three grad students pestering me with FITS tapes they wanted to
read last month! We are a SPAN node (MADRAF) and you can logon to
IRAF as Username: IRAF and Password: IRAF. Please send mail to
