Adam - the problem you report with non-ASCII characters from imhead doesn't
sound familiar. Do you know the history of the image? Was it
processed or edited after being read in by rfits and before running imheader?
As a test, I ran wfits on dev$pix and then rfits, and am sure that rfits isn't
introducing the non-ASCII characters you see. Where was the fits tape
written? Is it possible the characters are in the fits header on tape? Can
you tell where they are in the header - some string in the user area? Sorry I
can't be of much help - you need to pin down where the characters are
occurring and trace the tasks the data has been through.Suzanne Jacoby
