Hello,

I am using Cygwin on a Windows 8.1 to run iraf and ds9. I used this tutorial for the download: http://www.iac.es/sieinvens/siepedia/pmwiki.php?n=HOWTOs.IrafCygwin
I am having trouble when using imexam on an opened image on ds9. There is garbage output to the terminal and the terminal seems to freeze, and will only unfreeze when using the quit command associated with imexam. All functions not requiring a new window to be opened seem to be functioning properly. I have tried using mkiraf again to make sure terminal is set to xgterm. I'm not sure what else to try.

Thank you in advance for the help.

Emily

The garbage means that you're not using an XGterm as the terminal window. XGterm needs to be installed separately and started before you log into the CL, you can use an XTerm but need to set the terminal type appropriately if you do. The other thing to keep in mind is that Cygwin is no longer actively supported so XTerm may be your only option if the XGterm binary doesn't work.
