I have iraf installed on my home computer. I want to use adumpcat to get sections of astrometric catalog for use in finding coords of stars on images.(very large images). I have tried it but could not connect to online catalogs. For example, the output file contains "you don't have permission to access cgi-bin/usno/usnoextract. How to I get permission to access catalogs. How can I see what cats are available.

That URL to access the catalog is only defined in the noao$astcat/lib/catdb.dat.OLD file ad shouldn't be used unless you are referencing it directly. Try doing an "unlearn astcat" and then an "lpar astcat" to be sure you are using the "astcat$lib/catdb.dat" file as the 'catdb' parameter, and an "lpar acatdump" to be sure you're not referencing that file explicitly. Also, what catalog name are you trying to access, it appears to be "usno2@noao", correct? You might try "usnob1@noao" or "usno2@cadc" instead.

Another idea: I have ua2 cat on my local machine and use it for imwcs of small images. Tried it on this large image with no luck. imwcs uses a path statement to find the ua2 cat. Is there a way I can tell adumpcat where this is on my machine, so I can do it all here?
Thanks ,
Jim

Sorry for the slow reply, travel.
ADUMPCAT assumes the data are available on a web interface, not a local file. You'd have to not only setup a CGI script to query the file but configure it for ADUMPCAT to use as well. Did the other services not work?
