Hi, I've never had this problem with iraf before. I am using iraf version V2.15.1a on Linux Centos 64-bit OS. Whenever I try to run a command that needs to open another window (e.g., after typing "l" in imexamine, or in "implot some_image.fits", or "graph some_image.fits"), I get a bunch of symbols back in the iraf window (almost like it tries to dump out the actual binary). It looks sort of like this:ecl> implot subimage.fits
/0d`#r#S#r)T$f)T#r)T0"p)@250#r)T#r/U$f/U#r/U"p/B500#r/U#r5W$f5W#r5W"p5D750#r5W#r;Y$f;Y#r;Y"p:_1000#r;Y#r<K#r#S&c#S&c$E&c#S%x!Y-.05&c#S)u#S)u$E)u#S)i"_0)u#S-f#S-f$E-f#S,{"F.05-f#S0w#S0w$E0w#S0l"S.10w#S4i#S4i$E4i#S3}"F.154i#S6f#S6f#S6f)T5r)T6f)T6f/U5r/U6f/U6f5W5r5W6f5W6f;Y5r;Y6f; ... and so on, for quite a while. No actual error message is ever provided -- it just hangs until I "Ctrl-C" out of it (iraf remains perfectly responsive after that). I can open ds9 from iraf, so I am not sure why it can't seem to be able to open any additional windows. Any help would be appreciated!

Garbage on the screen like this almost always means you aren't running from a graphics-capable terminal (e.g. you're using an rxvt or a gnome-terminal or console of some kind). When you do the MKIRAF it'll ask for the terminal type (apparently you set it to 'xterm'), but you need to then be sure to actually login from that type of terminal.
