Hi all I was hoping to get confirmation on how I install external packages..
And also where the tar.gz files are available (I am currently looking for color).
Basically, I want to use the following installation guide as a template (instructions on installing tables and stsdas are near the bottom):
http://geco.phys.columbia.edu/~rubab/iraf/iraf_step_by_step_installation
and I'm hoping it will be as simple as "wherever I see stsdas replace it with color" .A final query is - near the bottom of this instruction guide, for installing stsdas he has the following commands:python python/compileall.py ./pythonpython python/compileall.py ./python/*is that a necessary final step for any external package I would like to install?ThanksAndrew

[/quote:fca7ea99b0]In the sense that what you put in the hlib$extern.pkg file to declare the package will be the same, then yes you can replace 'stsdas' with 'color'. External packages usually have a README file (or a 'pkg.readme' file in the distribution directory) that contains detailed instructions, but they are all fairly similar.[quote:fca7ea99b0]

[/quote:fca7ea99b0]That is a peculiarity of STSDAS to build the python tasks in the package, you won't need to do this for any other package.
