Seems to be a very silly question but, to my confusion, I could not find the answer by myself.Which application should be used for checking the distribution files against CHECKSUMS file? Strangely, it is not mentioned in README file. I have also found several answers on these forums, suggesting checking the downloaded files (in case of installation problems) but never mentioning the proper tool.Modern systems use md5sum or sha1sum but this does not seem to be the case for IRAF. From the CHECKSUMS file format I guessed that the tool should be the "sum" command. It gives, however, wrong output, even after redownloading the files, so I guess there must be some trick here that I am not aware of. I tried "sum" on Linux Centos 5.3 and on Solaris 10 machine, to no success.Example:ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/v214/PCIX/CHECKSUMS entries for as.pcix.gen.gz:
42862 51616 as.pcix.gen.gz (BSD style)
as.pcix.gen.gz 28023 25808 (SYSV style)My "sum" gives:
>sum -r as.pcix.gen.gz (BSD)
26158 25808
>sum -s as.pcix.gen.gz (SYSV)
26826 51615 as.pcix.gen.gzAny hints would be appreciated.regards, Michal

It appears I forgot to update the CHECKSUMS file with the v2.14.1 patch, so the numbers are all wrong. I just updated the file with the current release, however there is no actual application to check the values, it is informational only. That said, the new values still don't match the values you posted, so either the file may actually be corrupt, or the 'sum' task under CentOS is doing something different.

OK, it seems that my as.pcix.gen.gz file was 12 bytes longer (although 'tar tzf as.pcix.gen.gz' works fine) so I guess I may have accidentally ungzipped and then re-gzipped it.Now 'sum' shows the right numbers. It might be worth updating the https://iraf.net/ftp/iraf/v214/PCIX/CHECKSUMS file also, as now it seems to be the old one still, dated 27-Mar-2008.BTW, the old file was wrong also with SYSV/BSD labels: SYSV version of 'sum' counts 512B blocks, BSD - 1kB blocks, so the SYSV second column should be twice (possibly minus one) the BSD values. Thanks, Michal.
