Hi -
Looks like IRAF on Solaris 10 x86 is still a fully supported port, and,
indeed, it works well. However, x11iraf is not available for this platform, and the compilation
fails for us almost immediately in the obm/Tcl section. This is true for
at least versions 1.5 and 2.0beta. I know someone inquired here about
this 3-4 years ago, but I'd like to see if the situation is any different
now?Turns out that ds9 compiles extremely well on Solaris 10 x86, so we
can get by without ximtool. But our users would really like xgterm on
this platform, since they do a lot of spectral analysis. Thanks,
Patrick

Hi Patrick,I'll trade you for a Fabry-Perot IRAF external package 8-)Seriously, the only thing really missing from the obm/Tcl/Imakefile was to set the CFLAGS options to include "-DUSE_STDARG". This does most of the work and you can easily get the 24-bit ximtool to compile, however XGterm's lineage of Xterm code means that it is a deeply painful process to sort through the flags needed to get a working XGterm. Thanks to the kinds folks at NSO I was able to find a machine for this and I'm working on the xgterm code, but it might be a day or many before I get it sorted. In any case I'll let you know when a full X11IRAF package is ready, if you want the ximtool binary before then let me know.Cheers,
-Mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks very much. We are not in a huge hurry, so I will wait and see
what you can work out. Having ximtool would be great, but I think
they are most concerned with xgterm at the moment.Next task will be to see if I can encourage STScI to distribute Solaris x86
binaries for STSDAS and TABLES. From the iraf.net survey, looks like
Solaris is not a very popular option anymore. But now that Sun has
stopped selling SPARC-based desktop boxes, it seems appropriate to
add x86 binaries to the collection, if it is not too difficult. I appreciate
that you have made IRAF binaries available for this architecture. Thanks for looking into the x11iraf issue for us.

Hi Pat,The changes to XGterm are more trouble than I have time for at the moment, so I cheated and built a binary distribution using and old XGterm binary from a previous solaris/x86 system. There haven't been substantial changes to xgterm in a while and this includes the 24-bit ximtool so hopefully it's what you need. I added a link to the main page for the new binaries, or check in ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/x11iraf for the 'sunos' release.I also put binaries for STSDAS and TABLES v3.10 in the extern package download area (https://iraf.net/ftp/iraf/extern/), again see the sunos architecture.Cheers,
-Mike

Hi Mike,
That is beyond the call of duty - thanks very much! I will try these out
on Monday or Tuesday, when I get into the office.I was not expecting you to do anything about STSDAS/TABLES at all,
so thanks doubly for that. I appreciate your handling this so quickly.Best regards,
Patrick
