Hi!

We have a problem with pyraf v 1.6.1.

First of all some information about the computer:

- OS: Suse 11.1 english, icelandic keyboard
- KDE 4.1.3 release 4.9
- IRAF: 2.12.1 for suse architecture
- Python 2.5.4 (By default python 2.6 and python
3 are installed on Suse 11.1. So, I build up
python 2.5.4 from the scratch using GCC 4.3.2)
- STSDAS & TABLES 3.9 (Examples in the
installation manual worked.)
- IPython, libread, Numeric, Numpy, PMW, TKinter,
and URWID are installed.
- DS9 worksWhenever we try to run xgterm, we get the following output:[code:1:4dbaafd7a3]xgterm: no available ptys [/code:1:4dbaafd7a3]

After the installation I installed the the xgterm.fedora and made mkiraf again. Now imexamine works fine but still not pyraf. It always complains:[code:1:4dbaafd7a3]
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 91 (X_QueryColors)
Value in failed request: 0xff141312
Serial number of failed request: 1369
Current serial number in output stream: 1369PANIC in `/iraf/bin.suse/x_tv.e': Write to IPC with no reader
[/code:1:4dbaafd7a3]

Do you have an idea how to solve it? Does pyraf have to be reinstalled after the exchange of iraf? Confused Cheers,Steve

Try using the X11IRAF v2.0 release from the main page. The xgterm.fedora binary will indeed fix the 'no available ptys' problem, but I'm not sure what you're doing exactly when you say pyraf fails. PyRAF is simply a replacement for the CL and the 'write to IPC with no reader' message usually means the display server disappeared in which case this is a DS9 crash. Is there some particular IMEXAM command that causes the message? Can XGterm be used for doing "simple" graphics (e.g. "cl> implot dev$pix")? Does the DS9 window go away or "hang"? Does upgrading to the newest DS9 (or ximtool) work instead?-Mike
