I use iraf apphot package phot task to manually locate the star(by pressing space bar) I want. The coordinates of my target are, say, x=400, y=300 but when I pressed space bar on the star I want, it located the star next to it, which is a brighter one.
This problem happened before, but then when I zoom in the image, it worked. However, this time even if I zoom in to 32(ds9), it still doesn't work.

How far away is the second star? It sounds like it might be a problem in the setting of the centering box, i.e. the centerpars.cbox parameter is too big or the datapars.scale parameter is >1 meaning the effective box is larger than you think and the brighter star is being found.-Mike
