I was curious if anyone else has noticed the Solx86 core binaries running slower than the Linux binaries for Iraf2.14? My lab is running a heterogeneous set of machines/OS, but in this instance I have two identical machines, one with OpenSuSe11 and the other with Solaris 10 x86, and the difference in speed on tasks is more than a factor of 2 on things like mknoise, median, imcombine, etc.Is there something I need to change in the Solx86 installation, or is this common?thanks,
Ian

Unfortunately, I don't have access to identical machines to do a direct comparison, but there is no particular reason to believe IRAF on solaris should be running any slower. A shot-in-the-dark explanation would be if for instance you were using data on an NFS disk, and the slowdown is then caused by NFS. I can try to do some basic benchmarking and fudge for machine differences, but other than what you can normally do to tweak Solaris (e.g. virtual memory size, etc) there's nothing in IRAF to configure.-Mike
