Hi!
I just installed IRAF on the Kubuntu7.1 (Gutsy) Distribution on my new hp compaq notebook. I used this http://geco.phys.columbia.edu/~rubab/iraf/iraf_step_by_step_installation walkthrough, which worked fine. But when i open a fits image it looks like ds9 changed down the resolution. i don't think that it is the 8-bit problem, because the colors are fine, just the same as in my old working iraf version on SUSE 10. but when i display in both version the same image, it looks like it was half the resolution (bigger pixels) on the new iraf 2.13/ds9 5.0 in ubuntu.
any ideas?

Do you mean that if you load an image standalone in DS9 and compare it to an image displayed from IRAF, they look different? How big is the image? Does it appear to be just the central pixels or has the whole thing been scaled? When you load an image standalone a frame buffer should be created that is large enough for the entire image, and you'll be able to pan/zoom around the display. However, when you display from IRAF the frame buffer is determined by the 'stdimage' environment variable and will default to a 512x512 frame buffer. If the image is larger you'll only see the central pixels unless you enable the 'fill' parameter to scale it.To increase the size of the frame buffer, simply reset the 'stdimage' variable to something like 'imt2048' for a 2Kx2K frame buffer. The GDEVICES command will list the available sizes. Note also that DS9 will require that a /usr/local/lib/imtoolrc (or $HOME/.imtoolrc) file be present on the system so it understands the meaning of the frame buffer number sent when displaying. This is created by the iraf install script as a link to $iraf/dev/imtoolrc, but you can copy it by hand if it is missing.I hope this helps, if you still have problems please post more of a description of what it is you're seeing, and what you were expecting.Cheers,
-Mike

hi!
no, i meant the image displayed by ds9 from iraf on my new ubuntu-laptop in comparison with the same procedure on my old suse-pc. the problem had nothing to do with the 'fill+' thing, i changed the stdimage from imt800 to imt1024, now it works. the effect was over the hole image, looked like it had a very poor resolution.
thanks.
