Hello!
I'm new at IRAF and i finally got it installed and working, also installed x11iraf proberly (i guess, xgterm is running) and downloaded DS9, which i can start seperately. But how can i connect it with the iraf display task? I put DS9 in the /bin and /usr/bin direcories. when i execute "display xyz.fits" i get an error message concerning bin$x_tv.e. i checked out that this file is in the /bin and /iraf/bin direcories (i tried it with the x_tv.e.LNUX as well as with the x_tv.e.RHUX from http://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/ftp/iraf/x11iraf/) , but it doesn't work, with the the normal shell cl as well as with the xgterm cl. what do i have to do? i run iraf on a suse 10.3 distribution.
thanks in advance

It depends on exactly what the error message is: A 'cannot open connected subprocess' usually means an installation error where the binaries were unpacked in teh wrong directory. A 'cannot open device' means either the DS9 isn't running, or the task cannot connect to it properly, or it could be something to do with the data itself. Please post the exact error message, and the version of IRAF you're using.-Mike

Then check that you've got an x_tv.e file in the $iraf/bin.suse directory (normally this will be /iraf/iraf/bin.suse/x_tv.e), and that the binary is executable. If you downloaded a new binary the permissions may have been lost and will need to be restored. The x_tv.e binary should be in the same directory as the cl.e, so since you're able to login to the CL I'm assuming the files were otherwise unpacked in the proper place.-Mike

Make sure DS9 is running before you try the IRAF display command, it will not be started automatically.-Mike
