i've installed iraf using http://geco.phys.columbia.edu/~rubab/iraf/iraf_step_by_step_installation
this manual. everything is almost ok, except :root@beribe-erdve:/media/170/programs/linux/iraf/iraf/kubuntu.iraf/0# dpkg -i --force-architecture termcap-compat_1.2.3_i386.deb
dpkg - warning, overriding problem because --force enabled:
package architecture (i386) does not match system (amd64)
dpkg: considering removing libtermcap in favour of termcap-compat ...
dpkg: yes, will remove libtermcap in favour of termcap-compat.
(Reading database ... 108373 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking termcap-compat (from termcap-compat_1.2.3_i386.deb) ...
Moving old termcap file to /etc/termcap.old
dpkg: error processing termcap-compat_1.2.3_i386.deb (--install):
trying to overwrite `/etc/termcap', which is also in package termcap
Restoring old termcap file from /etc/termcap.old
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Errors were encountered while processing:
termcap-compat_1.2.3_i386.deb
root@beribe-erdve:/media/170/programs/linux/iraf/iraf/kubuntu.iraf/0# nevertheless, i continued the installation and everything went ok. at last i wanted to run iraf (by "cl", or "ecl", or "sh iraf") but:root@beribe-erdve:/media/170/programs/linux/iraf/iraf/kubuntu.iraf/0# cl
/iraf/iraf/bin.linux/ecl.e: error while loading shared libraries: libtermcap.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
root@beribe-erdve:/media/170/programs/linux/iraf/iraf/kubuntu.iraf/0# then i've tried:
root@beribe-erdve:/media/170/programs/linux/iraf/iraf/kubuntu.iraf/0# ecl
/iraf/iraf/bin.linux/ecl.e: error while loading shared libraries: libtermcap.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
root@beribe-erdve:/media/170/programs/linux/iraf/iraf/kubuntu.iraf/0#
and at last i've tried :root@beribe-erdve:/media/170/programs/linux/iraf/iraf/kubuntu.iraf/0# sh iraf
root@beribe-erdve:/media/170/programs/linux/iraf/iraf/kubuntu.iraf/0# nothing happened except that ds9 opened.
i'm using kubuntu 7.04 x86_64. does anybody know how to run iraf on my machine, and how to fix the problem with termcap?
i found one sollution on the web:bash-3.00# cd /lib
bash-3.00# ln -s libncurses.so libtermcap.so
bash-3.00# ln -s libtermcap.so libtermcap.so.2but irt changed nothing.. Frownany sollutions?or maybe somebody knows another way how to install iraf on debian based 64 bit architectured linux distributions?

Hi! As known Iraf is a 32 bit application. So, on x86_64 platform it running using emulation. All libraries special for i386 should be in directory /emul/ia32-linux/ and so on according to filesystem. Try to copy files libtermcap.so.2 libtermcap.so.2.0.8 into /emul/ia32-linux/lib/ and run Iraf.

Cheers, Eugene.
