I'm trying to install 2.13b on my windows XP system. Cygwin installed easily, but when I try to read the IRAF binaries (using tar zxpf as instructed) I'm told the files aren't gzips, viz:$ tar zxpf as.pcix.gen.gzgzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errorsand it gets even worse if I use the two slashes before the file name:$ tar zxpf //as.pcix.gen.gz
tar (child): //as.pcix.gen.gz: Cannot open: No such host or network path
tar (child): Error is not recoverable: exiting nowgzip: stdin: unexpected end of file

The file might have been corrupted if you didn't transfer in a binary mode, or it could be truncated. If you installed WGET you can use that to retrieve the file, otherwise try a different web browser if you downloaded from the link directly. The file size should be 21539879 bytes if you want to check for truncation.-Mike

That seems to do it. When I download using Explorer, the files get expanded for some reason. I can't come in via any of the FTP packages I have, but when I come in with Netscape, the files come down nicely and politely, to the right size to the last bit. When I run tar on them, I have to be careful NOT to use the preceding double-slash: if I do "tar zxpf as.pcix.gen.gz" everything expands nicely and the proper links are made. Onward and upward,Alex
