I have a new Intel Mac Pro (but had the same issue with my old G4): X11 can only ever open one terminal window. Typing "xterm," or "Command-N" or selecting "Terminal" from the Applications menubar does nothing. If the single X11 window is closed for any reason, I can't get another one to open, and I have to quit X11 and restart. I checked the /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file and it looks the same as the one on a machine whose X11 is working properly (though neither machine seems to have the files referred to in xinitrc). Any ideas?

Hi Karen,Try starting as "/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm" and see if that makes a difference, if so then you probably just don't have /usr/X11R6/bin in your path. Command-N does nothing under X by default but you should be able to open as many X apps as you like. Check also for a DISPLAY environment variable set in your .cshrc/.login file that may be sending the window someplace else. Do you get an error message when starting on the cmdlin (if so, what?), do you get the prompt back right away, or is it that no window ever shows up?Cheers,
-Mike

All fixed. For some reason, my PATH variable was incorrectly set in my .bashrc file. Now onto trying to install IRAF (I just sent a bash vs. csh quesiton to the systems forum!)
