I'm about to try reducing Suprime Cam data from Subaru. Suprime is a wide field camera similar to Mosaic with 10 CCDs instead of 8. I've reduced a lot of KPNO and CTIO Mosaic data and am familiar with mscred, so I was hoping to use it for Suprime cam rather than learn a whole new software package. Unfortunately each Suprime image is stored as 10 individual fits files rather than as an MEF. Has anyone used mscred with Suprime data? If not, do you think it would be possible to simply assemble the 10 individual files into an MEF (making the appropriate header edits) and then use mscred? Would mscred handle 10 chips?thanks,
Josh

Frank would be the expert here and will reply when he is able, however I don't think there would be a problem with the 10 extns assuming the headers were "correct". What is needed is something like a CFH12K or ESOWFI package that munges the headers to create the DETSEC/TRIMSEC/CCDSEC et al keywords and writes a proper instrument file. Have a look at these packages and please post any code you manage to get working. For combining the 10 files into a single MEF see the FITSUTIL package or else just IMCOPY the images to an extension and set the appropriate 'append' and/or 'inherit' attributes (see the 'FITS Kernel Users Guide' at https://iraf.net/irafdocs/fits_userguide/ for details). Cheers,
-Mike
