Is it possible within IRAF to rebin spectra by a factor of 2 (to obtain better S/N) rather than to a specific dispersion value? I see dispcor can be used to set a new value of 'wavelength value per pixel', but as the dispersion of echelle spectra vary with wavelength this method presumably involves some averaging and interpolation, is there a task that just allows you to sum the pixel values?

The BLKAVG task can be used. There is an option to compute a sum instead o an average. The dispersion information should be properly propagated by this task though it is not specifically designed for spectra.Frank
