To Whom it may concern:
Hi,  i have been running iraf on a linux red hat 8 laptop. I'm having problems running a certain .cl script file that runs too slow. The script file is a photometry analyzing program. I tried running the copy command on a xgterm terminal and i takes on average 6.5 mins. Also the help commands takes that long to execute. When I'm analyzing data using my script file it takes about 35 - 45 mins to finish on the linux red hat 8 laptop, but I'm using the same program on my mac and it only takes on average 10 mins to finish. Also some of the output files that are generated from the red hat machine are corrupted. Can you please help me with any suggestions in how to fix the problem? I have tried reinstalling iraf and i also installed some of the patches. None of them have improve the computers performance.
Thank You,
Johel Martinez.

Are you by any chance using an NFS filesystem for the data? A COPY is in the system binary which is locked in the cache by default and is thus already running, thereafter it simply reads the input and writes to the output. The unix 'dmesg' command will print the system log an tell you whether there are any NFS problems with the machine in question, but if this is the case using 'cp' at the unix level on the same files should show the same slowness. Does it? If you work entirely on local files, e.g.[code:1:b5a9da9a68]cl> copy /etc/passwd /tmp/[/code:1:b5a9da9a68]it should be almost instantaneous. Is it?If it is an NFS problem, sometimes restarting the server daemon helps. Hope this helps.Cheers,
-Mike
