I wanted to install "XImtool" on a solaris 9 machine. Downloaded
"X11iraf-v1.3-bin.ssun.tar.gz" (binary) in my home directory and tried to
follow the instructions in the README file to install binary package. 1) When I try to mv bin.ssun/* /usr/local/bin I get:
mv: cannot create /usr/local/bin/ism_wcspix.e: Permission denied
mv: cannot create /usr/local/bin/obmsh: Permission denied
mv: cannot create /usr/local/bin/resize: Permission denied
mv: cannot create /usr/local/bin/vximtool: Permission denied
mv: cannot create /usr/local/bin/xgterm: Permission denied
mv: cannot create /usr/local/bin/ximtool: Permission denied
mv: cannot create /usr/local/bin/ximtool-alt: Permission denied
mv: cannot create /usr/local/bin/xtapemon: Permission denied
2) When I try to run it from my home directory:
# /home/X11IRAF/bin.ssun/ximtool &
Error: Can't open display:I am doing all of the above as "root". we also have a "iraf" user on our
system. Please let me know how I can successfully get XImtool working on
our solaris 9 machine?Thank YouUR.

[/quote:8e8ca85d2d]First be sure /usr/local/bin exists and is owned by root, then check that root can read the files you're tryiing to move. The permission denied means you either can't read the file, or can't write to the directory for some reason.[quote:8e8ca85d2d]2) When I try to run it from my home directory:

Error: Can't open display: [/quote:8e8ca85d2d]If you're doing this as root but you've started your X session as yourself, then this simply means that root can't put a window on your screen for lack of permission. Use % xhost +from another terminal window logged in as you or else start the ximtool as yourself (you'll want to do that anyway since the display from the iraf session is based on userid).-Mike

Thanks for your reply.I am still not able to get this to work.
1)/usr/local/bin exists and is owned by root.
2) root can read the files I am trying to move.
3) As root I should be able to write to /usr/local/bin.I am unable to copy the files from my home dir to its /usr/local/bin etc.. These files are owned by me. I am unable to copy them as user and also as root. Please note that /usr/local/ is nfs mounted from another machine.When I run "install" script it appears to have completed the installation but I don't see the the files in /usr/local/bin etc.When I try to run ximtool & as user or root in my home directory, it says:bash-2.05$ ximtool &
bash: ximtool: command not found
[1] 8320
[1] Exit 127 ximtool
When I run it as follows:bash-2.05$ %xhost+ ./ximtool &
bash: bg: %xhost+: no such I would really appreciate your help.Thank You.

[/quote:0c1286e52c]Note there is a space between the 'xhost' (the command) and the '+' (the argument). Using "./ximtool" will execute the comman in the current directory, from just using "ximtool" it appears you don't have "." in your path so it isn't being found. The latter message requires a different syntax to execute two commands, e.g. a semicolon between them.-Mike
