Hello: I've been running IRAF on my Dell Linux pc for several months,
but nothing very stressful. Recently we have started using daophot and
ds9 more in a mode that requires switching back and forth between the
text and graphics window. I do start iraf from an xterm window and use
xterm or xterms (do not have xgterm installed or running). A task in
Daophot (PSF) runs through a series of plots on the graphics windows and
requires a short text command; fairly often, the handoff between the
windows is getting interrupted with garbage spewn to the text window .
Any suggestions?

One of the shortcomings of XTerm is that it is possible for the graphics cursor to "lose sync", usually because you're typing "too fast" (specifically before the cursor is ready for new input). Steadily typing something like a '0' (zero) repeatedly can help put things back in sync. You might also try using the 'xtermjh' device name which puts the status line output on the text window rather than overwriting the display. XGterm avoids the sync problem entirely and the full-screen cursor is generally nicer, it's worth installing.
Hope this helps.Cheers,
-Mike
