any terminal, or by creating an icon on your desktop.I should let you know that although x11iraf provides more graphically
oriented utilities, you still must learn the command-line that is the
cl.(As a sidenote, you may want to experiment with PyRAF, which is a
graphical interface to IRAF written in Python. However, we do not
support PyRAF as it was created and is maintained by STScI. See
http://www.stsci.edu/resources/software_hardware/pyraf for more
details. If you do decide to use PyRAF, then please contact
help@stsci.edu for support.)

can use ximtool (see my reply to your problems below), or ds9, which
can be run in 24-bit environments such as yours, which is available from
SAO: http://hea-www.harvard.edu/RD/ds9/We also do not support ds9, and can contact the people at SAO for
questions or problems with ds9.>

When running xgterm, you will be presented with a terminal window
where you can start the cl. Hence I believe your experience is
consistent with functionality. The purpose of xgterm is to provide
an extended graphics library than what is available in, e.g., xterm.> ..................................

> ############################################################################# The problem with all of the above issue with the color depth is that an
8-bit setting is not specified in your XF86Config file in /etc/X11.
You can rerun your X Server setup using the redhat utilities, to
include an 8-bit setting, or reconfigure your X Server to run in 8-bit
mode.I think the easier alternative is to run ds9, as you will not have any
issues with the color depth.Be sure to start ds9 (or ximtool, in the event that you reconfigure
your X Server for 8-bit mode) before running display. The display task
attempts to "talk" to the display tool, and if it's not available, it
will print the error that you are seeing.I would also like to point you to further documentation, namely: http://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/ftp/pub/beguide.ps.Zas well as other documentation at the following URL: http://iraf.noao.edu/docs/recommend.htmlI hope that helps. Let us know if you have further questions or
problems.Cheers,Phillip
