Hi again,
Sorry to bother you again. A related problem. When I try
to convert an 8192x8192 FITS image to GIF using "export"
(under IRAF 2.12-1 on Solaris) I get:cl> export h_sb_sect24_v1.0_drz_img.fits Ball_lin2.gif gif
outbands="zscale(i1,-0.0015,0.0276)"
h_sb_sect24_v1.0_drz_img.fits -> Ball_lin2.gif

cl> This is on an 8GB machine with more than 6GB free, so it
