Dear SuperHuman,What a great program; another human achievement we can all feel good about!I've installed it without error; however, I tried:INPUT: cl>display dev$pix
OUTPUT: ERROR: Cannot open device (node!imtool,,512,512)INPUT: cl>gdevice
OUTPUT: ..... imt1 imt512 imtool 512 512 ...,etc.I looked for imtool in the bin directories and couldn't find it; "whereis"
command doesn't always
find things, either. I found ximtool, and vximtool. I tried running
ximtool from inside IRAF but it couldn't find it.I logout of IRAF; ran "ximtool:" Had to restart X: startx -- -depth 8.Ximtool worked okay but for some Color functions in the menu, such as
"Invert" etc.ximtool is in /usr/local/bin; one question: am I supposed to copy these to
another directory for them to work within IRAF?Also, I'm running Debian; so, I deleted the extra binaries during the
installation; such that the /iraf/iraf/unix/bin.suse,
/iraf/iraf/unix/bin.redhat, etc directories were emptyERROR . Was that my
mistake? Do I have to reinstall? Thanks,

Hi Charles,
A 'cannot open device' message like this always means that the
display server could not be found. You must have XImtool (or DS9) running
before you try to display, they will not be opened automatically. You can
start these from another window, declare them as 'foreign' commands
within iraf as e.g. task $ximtool = "foreign"(note you can add this to your login.cl file), or start them as an escape
command with e.g. cl> !ximtool &In either of the last two cases the ximtool command must be found in the
default search path set by your .cshrc (or .bashrc) file since that sets
the environment for host commands and not simply your .login.> Ximtool worked okay but for some Color functions in the menu, such as
> "Invert" etc. Check that the keyboard NumLock key is not enabled, this changes
the X event masking and will keep menu selections and brightness/contrast
scaling from working in ximtool.> Also, I'm running Debian; so, I deleted the extra binaries during the

'linux' architecture and removing these binaries isn't a problem.
Hope this helps, let us know if you still have questions.Regards,
