Hello,I am currently using IRAf to reduce HST WFPC2 data. I have been using ximtool
to display and manipulate IRAF images for quite some time now. The last time I
opened ximtool, however, I received warnings on the screen, and though I was
able to display an image in the window, none of the controls worked.Below are the warnings that appeared when I opened ximtool:
ssa1 [/u/nbhatt/iraf] 5>ximtool &
[1] 17739
ssa1 [/u/nbhatt/iraf] 6>Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "gray"

Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "grey75"
Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "gray65"
Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "SteelBlue"
Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "Gold"When I closed the ximtool window after realizing none of the controls worked,
the following message appeared on my terminal:XIO: fatal IO error 131 (Connection reset by peer) on X server "ssa1:0.0"
after 5431 requests (5430 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
If you recognize this, I would greatly appreciate your letting me know what the
error is so that our systems administrator can fix it.Thank you.

Hi Naman, The various warning about "cannot allocate color" simply mean some
other application (typically Netscape but depending on the platform this
may also be the window manager) has already allocated all the colors. if
you're using a RedHat system with the default Enightenment window manager
the control problem seen may be a known bug in Enlightenment which
prevents ximtool from ever gaining the colormap focus. The only
workaround for this is to use a different window manager such as
WindowMaker under GNOME or switch to the KDE desktop instead of GNOME.
Both GNOME and KDE use a lot of colors for the desktop and so you'll see
more colormap flashing in 8-bit mode, using an "older" window manager
such as FVWM or twm will help with this. You can also shut down your
Netscape before starting XImtool or limit the color resources required by
defining (in your .Xdefaults file): XImtool*basePixel: 128
XImtool*maxColors: 100
XImtool*cmapInitialize: TrueThis will allocate only 100 colors starting at cell 128 and should help
limit the flashing (ximtool defaults to use ~210 colors). Even without a
Netscape running it's sometimes the Desktop applications that eat all of
the colors and account for the numerous "cannot allocate" messages. Lastly,
be sure the keyboard NumLock key is not turned on, this changes the event
masking for the X server keeping the colormap scaling (and menu selection)
events from being recognized.
Hope this helps, let us know if you still have questions.Cheers,
Mike Fitzpatrick

If you are running solaris, the file to get is:x11iraf-v1.2-bin.ssun.tar.ZPlease follow the README file instructions. Also please read the README
file that is in 'x11iraf-v1.2-bin.ssun.tar.Z' for installation

the x11iraf package?.2)Another problem is i have downloaded and unpacked the itoolcmap.tar. But i
have not moved to anywhere yet.
Do i have to move *.lut files to /usr/local/lib/imtoolcmap/ .

Hi,
I installed iraf on my unix station and it seems to work fine - however
I have problems running iraf from PC's when using either "xterm" or
"vncserver". I can open windows and run iraf, however I cannot get
ximtool to work. Are there any display parameters I need to set? The
error message is: Xlib: extension "shape" is missing on display ...,
BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)...

Hi Esther,
The X shape extensions are used by the Athena widget set used in
ximtool, and are required by the prebuilt binaries. I'm not sure it
would help but about the only workaround would be to build the programs
from sources on your machine so whatever X system you have will be used.
You can get the sources from our /iraf/x11iraf archive directory as ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/x11iraf/x11iraf-v1.2-src.tar.ZJust unpack in some directory and build with the commmands % xmkmf
% make WorldThe new binaries will be put in the bin.<arch> subdirectory and you can try
running those.
Otherwise, be sure you've got the latest version of VNC for your
system. You can use the 'xdpyinfo' command in some window running under
the vncviewer to check for a "SHAPE" extension in the output. The other
usual cause of a BadMatch error is that the server is running something
other than an 8-bit visual. For VNC you would need to start the server as % vncserver -cc 3 :1The "-cc 3" specifies the PseudoColor visual, a "-depth 8" flag may also be
needed to specify 8-bits.
Hope this helps, let us know if you continue to have problems or
questions.Cheers,

The messages probably mean that you don't have a full "development"
environment installed on your machine. Depending on your linux system this
will either be a set of RPM files (e.g. RedHat), tar files or Debian package
files. Aside from the compilers and tools be sure you also install the
X development files which will contain the needed include files and libs.Cheers,

How do I go about installing the full development environment on sun solaris

Otherwise, is there a way of using the available binary files and making some

Is this a PC Solaris system? You would need to get the files from
the Solaris CD but our PC solaris system is down at the moment so I can't
say for sure what you'll need. One quick thing to check though is whether
or not you have a 'yacc' command in the /usr/ccs/bin directory, if so then
probably all you need to do is add /usr/ccs/bin to your path so it can be
found when building. Did you do an 'xdpyinfo' to see whether or not the
SHAPE extension exists in your VNC server or else update VNC? You can't
change the existing binaries to work around this. I don't see an Intel
Solaris binary download for VNC on their site, did this come with the
system or did you build it locally??-Mike

I did an 'xdpyinfo' and SHAPE does seem to be there.

Subject: Re: ximtoolEster,
I'm a but confused since your first message mentioned a PC system.
Is this some setup where you're running vncserver on the Sun but viewing
it on the PC? Is this a Windows PC or is it running e.g. linux? Is
the complaint about the Shape extension fatal or is the BadMatch coming
from X_PutImage? If the SHAPE extension is there it shouldn't be a problem,
did you run the xdpyinfo command in the vncviewer window so you're looking
at the vncserver setup and not the normal Sun windows environment?
If the BadMatch *does* come from X_PutImage and your *are* on
a Windows machine then you'll need to be sure the vncserver is running in
an 8-bit mode. This is done with the command vncserver -cc 3 -depth 8 :1and can be verified by checking the 'default visual id' and matching that
with the 'visual id' blocks in the xdpyinfo output. You may also need to
modify the display on the Windows side to only use 256 colors, but getting
the server visual right should do it.
Assuming we get this straightened out you won't need to do the
compilation. CDL is not required for XImtool to work properly. If you
still have problems could you send me the exact error messages as well
as clarify that machines involved here?Cheers,
-Mike

software package that allows to run and view programs on my workstation. It
works, but crashes when startinf Ximtool -- that's where the SHAPE extension
problem anf the BadMatch comes in.About VNCserver - on the Sun workstation I tried> vncserver -cc 3 -depth 8 :1but there are problems with that. "-depth 8" works fine, but "-cc 3" does not.
It comes up with the following error message when running vncserver on the
Unix:xauth: (argv):1: bad display name "innana:" in "add" command
xauth: (argv):1: bad display name "innana/unix:" in "add" commandI looked at the vncserver code, and could not find anything about "-cc", only
about "-co". I changed that path to the color-table (to
/usr/openwin/lib/X11/rgb.txt) but it did not work. Also I changed the code to
the default values "&GetXDisplayDefaults()" but that did not work either. Each
time I use "-cc 3" the program comes up with an error message at the lines:system("xauth -f $xauthorityFile add $host:$displayNumber . $cookie");
system("xauth -f $xauthorityFile add $host/unix:$displayNumber . $cookie");Are there any changes I need to make to the .Xauthority files?I noticed something strange/interesting.
When I try to build Ximtool from the source-files using xmkmf and make Word,
the installation crashes with the command:cc -Xc -I../../include -c Tabs.c
cc: unrecognized option `-Xc'
Tabs.c:1851: conflicting types for `MaxChild'
Tabs.c:1851: An argument type that has a default promotion can't match an
empty parameter name list declaration.
Tabs.c:295: previous declaration of `MaxChild'What's interesting is that the installation fails with "cc" and "-Xc" -- is it
possible that this has something to do with the error message I get when trying
to run vncserver? (Actually - so far I have been running Ximtool, which I had
installed from the binaries). Maybe I should first try to install Ximtool
propperly from the source files and then run it again. But in that case I'd
have to deal with the above error message.I am sorry if I sound confused -- this stuff is all new grounds for me, and I
am pretty much on my own in my department...Thanks for you help,
Esther

Okay, but the question is still does XImtool die because of a
BadMatch error caused by a 24-bit display or simply a missing SHAPE
extension in the server. If you're running a current vncserver for Solaris
the SHAPE extension should be there, and an xdpyinfo from an xterm/xgterm in
the vncviewer window will show this. If it's a 24-bit visual problem the
same xdpyinfo will show the 'default visual id' as something else and
XImtool will die with something like> X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
> Major opcode of failed request : 72 (X_PutImage)
> Serial number of failed request : 3670
> Current serial number in output stream: 3675 If the error is in anything other than X_PutImage let me know since that's
a SHAPE problem, otherwise it's a X visual problem and the solutions will
differ. Either way, please send me the exact error message you get from
the PC window trying to start ximtool.> About VNCserver - on the Sun workstation I tried

be used. The Xauth error implies you're not allowed to connect to the VNC
server being run. X requires that a given display number (':1' here) allow
client connections, you can do an "xhost +" on the vncviewer window to allow
all machines to connect to the server. What error do you see from the -cc
flag??> Are there any changes I need to make to the .Xauthority files?
See the xauth(1) man page for ways to modify this file.> What's interesting is that the installation fails with "cc" and "-Xc" -- is

These are unrelated: -cc sets the color class for the vncserver, the
-Xc flag to the compiler says to conform to ANSI-C standards which the Tabs
widget requires. This may mean you're not using the right compiler, either
because /opt/SUNWspro/bin/cc is not what a "which cc" returns as the C
compiler (instead of /usr/ucb/cc) or you don't have the Sun C compiler
available. Do a "which cc" and if it says /usr/ucb/cc change your 'path'
variable so /opt/SUNWspro/bin comes before /usr/ucb. What I really need to see are the outputs of a "which cc" and
"xdpyinfo" command run from an xterm/xgterm window in the vncviewer window
on the PC system. This will indicate the real cause for the ximtool crash
and reasons why the x11iraf sources won't compile.Cheers,
-Mike
