Reply-To: koester@astrophysik.uni-kiel.deDear colleagues,I would greatly appreciate help for using the mscred package.I am working on data from the Wide Field Imager at the 2.2m telescope of
ESO at La Silla.
My problems are probably quite simple - or I am quite stupid - but even
after studying all help and reading all papers you provide on the mscred
pages I have not been able to solve it.The problem ist most likely related to some translation difficulties of
keywords in fits headers. I have been able to add the DETSEC keywords to
my fits files, so that I am able to mscdisplay the 8 CCD images without
problems. However, I am already stuck at the zerocombine task. The error
message I get is "no data to combine"Is zerocombine really a new task that recognizes the MEF format?
If yes, what are exactly the keywords it needs to recognize the extensions
etc.; which of the various DATASEC, CCDSEC, DETSEC etc. does it actually
use?Sorry to bother you, and with best regards..........Detlev Koester

Cc: hjones@eso.orgHello Detlev,The message "no data to combine" means that the software does not recognize
the "ccdtype"; i.e. zero. The quick workaround is to set ccdtype=""
in zerocombine and other tasks that have that parameter.zerocombine is basically the same as for single CCDs but it automatically
works on MEF files. To process the data it needs CCDSEC (or some dummy
that matches the size of DATASEC and DETSEC), DATASEC, BIASSEC, and
TRIMSEC, as well as the image type, exposure time, etc.To make things simpler for WFI users I have recently created an add-on
package called ESOWFI:ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/extern/esowfi.tar.Z (and esowfi.readme)This would also be found on the ESO mirror site for IRAF.
This primarily contains one task, ESOHDR, that converts the raw ESO headers
to something that MSCRED wants. See the readme for more information.I ask that you contact Heath Jones (hjones@eso.org) for more help with
the WFI data. If he doesn't have the answer he or you can consult with
me.
Good luck,
Frank Valdes

Subject: Re: mscredDear Frank,I thank you very much for your help, which has brought me a great
step forward.Unfortunately the routine to fix headers, which I had obtained from
ESO, did not work at all. I was in the process of eliminating all
the errors step by step, but the esowfi task solves it immediately. Thanks again.......Detlev
