Subject: help with tapecap
X-Listprocessor-Version: 6.0c -- ListProcessor by Anastasios Kotsikonas
I have a tape that originated from CTIO that I am trying to read into
iraf 2.11.1 on a redhat 5.2 linux machine. The fits tape reads fine
into aips, but when I attempt to read it into IRAF I get messages of
the form:
File: mta[1] Image: tmp$5830a00010000.imh
Error reading FITS record 1
Warning: File read error (nst0)
No FITS extensions Image renamed to tmp$5830a0001
As far as I can tell the tapecap entry is fine. I can read and
write other FITS tapes. I have tried editing dev/tapecap to
change the default fits buffer size from 10 to 22, but that still
does not help. One thing that puzzles me the most is that
a
dd if=/dev/nst0 of=/tmp/foo bs=28800 or bs=65536 gives
dd: /dev/st0: Input/output error
0+0 records in
0+0 records out
although I would *expect* that the simple dd would read the bits
out of the tape. I'd suspect a bad tape except that aips can read
the file just fine. If write a new tape from aips, iraf cannot read
that either.
Does anyone have a sugguestion to try?

This should have probably gone to the adass.iraf.system news group. Not sure why it got sent to us.
