Subject: Re: IRAFMike--We are using the proper login for the computer. We looked in the uparm
directory and found that it had only one file in it: "symmkdir.par". We
tried going to the IRAF website--we did a search for "uparm" hoping to
find some ftp files we could put into our uparm directory. We found only
"uparmimlimcopy.par", "uparmimdelete.par", "uparmoncidenty.par",
"uparmonscopy.par", "uparmonscplot.par". When we tried to use imarith
again we got the error message "unable to open parameter file
uparm$imlimarih.par" We think that something during the installation of
IRAF on our computer (We're the first and only people to use IRAF at our
school) that resulted in the uparm directory being empty. Is there a
specific ftp file we can get on the website that has imarith and imsum?
Do you have another suggestion for us?Thanks for your help!!Andrea and Sara>From fitz Tue Aug 17 15:16:46 1999

Subject: Re: IRAFAndrea and Sara,
When you first do a MKIRAF the login.cl and uparm directory are
created, there is nothing in uparm. As you use the system and start saving
task parameter files the uparm directory will fill, if it's ever empty the
system just uses the defaults, i.e. you're not required to have any files
in uparm so there's nothing to download.
The message "unable to open parameter file" means there is either
an error in the permissions on the uparm directory and so you cannot write
to it, or less likely is that there is a read permission problem. First
make sure you can write something to the uparm directory, for example cl> copy dev$hosts uparm$
cl> dir uparm$hosts l+If you get an error on the copy command, check the permissions and owner of
the uparm directory using something like: cl> dir uparm l+ all+ | head nl=2
dt-rwr-r- fitz 3072 Aug 17 15:08 uparm/.
dt-rwr-r- fitz 5632 Aug 17 15:03 uparm/..You should be the owner of the directory and have write permission on ".".
What do you mean by the "proper login for the computer"? Is this
your account ('nowickia' or 'petsar22' ?), the 'iraf' user account or
something else? Did you do a MKIRAF from your account before loggin in or
use an existing set of files somewhere?? Note that the 'iraf' account
login isn't needed to run the CL, all you should have to do from any
directory in your account is type 'mkiraf' to make a login.cl and uparm
and 'cl' to login to the system.
If you still have problems could you send me the output of the
following commands: cl> !whoami
cl> =osfn("uparm$")
cl> dir uparm l+ all+ | head nl=2Hope this helps.Cheers,
-Mike
