Hi,We (the Australia Telescope National Facility) don't have a great deal of
call for IRAF, but occasionaly we have visitors and students that need access
to this software.I just installed V2.11 (we did run V2.10.4) for Sun Solaris and noted that
if "/tmp" is chosen and the default location for data storage (I know this
isn't in general a good place) then it appears that the IRAF "install" script
changes the permissions on /tmp from 041777 to 040777 which as you will know
removes the "sticky-bit" and breaks at least Secure Shell when using
"ssh-agent". I couldn't see any mention of this in the documentation but
thought you would like to know.I can understand why you may do this but a warning would be nice either in
the documentation or script. If I have missed something then please let me
know.Regards, Shaun.

Hi Shaun,
Thanks for your note. The permissions on the 'imdir' are explicitly
set to mode 777 by the install script to allow any user to create an image
directory, but since /tmp is not normally used as the imdir we didn't forsee
this side effect. I'm guessing you set /tmp because you didn't want to
create a special data directory, but a simpler solution would be to have
the user store their pixel data in the same directory as the header by usin
an imdir value of 'HDR$'. The user can either edit their login.cl file to
reset this, or you can make it the system default by editing the file
$iraf/unix/hlib/login.cl and on line 8 change "U_IMDIR" to "HDR$" before
running the install script.
Note that having a sticky bit set on /tmp can cause problems with
things like tape allocation where one user may need to remove a "lock file"
created by another user. Since IRAF isn't heavily used there I wouldn't
worry about it, but if you still have questions let us know.Cheers,
Mike Fitzpatrick
