Terry,> I was given your name as someone that could help me with reading an
> IRAF/FITS 4mm data tape written on one of the mountain tape drives. That's fine, but note that mail to iraf@noao.edu is logged on receipt
guaranteeing a prompt reply should someone in the group be unavailable.
(In this case, I would likely be answering the mail anyway.)> Instrument: McMath-Pierce Stellar Spectrograph

> IRAF 2.11.1Well, the KPNO DAT standard is DDS-2, but I suspect your drive should
handle this backwards compatibility automatically. I'm copying this
to our hardware zsar (and otherwise) in case he has any comment.> When attempting to read the tape, a large number of FITS tape errors

> Any ideas (apart from bad media)? If part of the tape can be read, this eliminates a large number of
possible configuration problems from consideration. The likeliest
candidates at this point would indeed be the media or some hardware
or cabling problem on the drive. Are your tapes data grade? Did you buy them from us or bring them
with you?Are there any SCSI errors reported in the system message file (try
/var/adm/messages)?Can you read (and/or write) other tapes? Do you have any other
tapes that were written on Kitt Peak (or any other machines other
than your own)?> Are there special modifications that I need to make to the IRAF
> tapecap file?I can't really comment without knowing how you have this set up now,
but this is probably not the case since you can read some of the files.> Any host-level modifications/patches??Not that I know of at the Unix level. IRAF v2.11.1 is current. Are these your only copies of your data? If these images were
acquired using the solar stellar spectrograph, they should be in
the "save the bits" archive. If you need to make an archive
retrieval request, fill out the form at: http://claret.kpno.noao.edu/stb/stbrequestRob Seaman
