Thanks very much for your time and very detailed reply. I will
go through it more thoroughly over the weekend and try to sift through
your points. One thing to add that your message implied might be
important: ICE was running in a different login session to these IRAF
commands. At some stage I think ICE might have tried to write out
an image it had just taken to the directory that I had renamed.
We indeed were very surprised at not finding this image until we
realised that the directory name was not the same (5:30am problem..!)
I don't recall any error messages from ICE, though until afterwards
I didn't suspect it. The pix files were in the same directory as the .imh files.
Unfortunately, I only use IRAF from time-to-time and was not savvy
enough to make a better set-up beforehand or to fix small problems, so
used the default login.cl that was in the account created for me. I can
probably get the file this was based on sent to me.Cheers,
