"Cannot open connected subprocess" error .... HELP !

Hi, I am trying to get IRAF up and running on my new SUN Ultra-1 workstation,
and am having a difficult time of it ! Here is one of my major problems:
when I try running anything having to do with the digiphot packages (for
example, I was trying to run noao.digiphot.daophot.phot), I get the following
error: ERROR: Cannot open connected subprocess (daophot$x_apphot.e)And when, for example, I tried running noao.digiphot.apphot.daofind, I got
a similiar (but slightly different) message: ERROR: Cannot open connected subprocess (apphot$x_apphot.e)I looked at the IRAF FAQ website, and found something related to this problem,
but it didn't help me solve mine. Basically, it said that the common
reason for this error is that the executables are in the "wrong" directory.Well, my x_apphot.e file happens to be in the following directory: /opt/iraf/irafbin/bin.ssunalong with a bunch of other files. I didn't place those files there ...
that was where they "defaulted to", when I unbundled the IRAF tar file,
and ran the install script ! (Just to make sure you know my specific
local directory structure ... the login file for IRAF is /opt/iraf/local)So what needs to be done ? Did these files default to the wrong
directory ? Do I just need to move them somewhere else ? If so, where ?Thank you,
--pam marcumPS: I am brand-new at this systems manager "thing", so please assume
total ignorance on my part when you respond !!

Hi Pam,> Sorry to be a bother again ... but ... I have another question for you !

This means either you're not running on a graphics-capable window
(e.g. a shelltool or cmdtool on a Sun, a VT100 emulator, etc), or that IRAF
thinks you're on a different kind of window. Typically you would run IRAF
from an Xterm window, or preferrably an XGterm window. When you first run
'mkiraf' you're asked for the type of window you use, be sure you're really
starting that window or you can reset it using e.g. "stty xgtermc" for an
XGterm or "stty xtermjh" for an Xterm window, a plain "stty" will tell you
what it's currently set to. After resetting it, type "gflush" to reinitialize
the graphics system.> Also, (a related question) ... can one use the PHOT routine interactively
> on an image, or does one have to make a contour of that image in order
> to interactively pick out stars to photometer ?
See the help page examples.> Oh, for the days when I was in a department large enough to have a local
> computer guru to handle these problems !!
Trust me, that ask the same questions.-Mike
