John,
I'm forwarding some mail about saoimage and 16 bit colormaps. It is
possible one of your recent saoimage releases has already corrected the
problem; I'm a bit behind in checking out your newer archives and getting
them ready for distribution to our own sites. If you respond directly to
Jim, please copy me.Thanks, Steve (rooke@noao.edu)

Subject: SAOIMAGEJeannette,Ken has been successfully using SAOIMAGE on his Decstation 3100 for several
weeks now. I'd like to be able to use it to talk to my 386 Unix machine
running X Windows, but there's a problem in that the 386 display only has
16 colors and SAOIMAGE grumps that it doesn't know about installing
alternate color maps and then exits. (When I was running a DOS X window
server with a MONOCHROME display it worked fine -- but when I went to the
color VGA on DOS it stopped working). What I'd like to know is whether there is a more recent SAOIMAGE release
than the one you sent Ken, preferably one which does implement the alternate
color maps. Failing that, can you give me the name and phone number of
the guy at CFA who wrote the program -- from the comments in the code it
looks like I want to talk to Michael VanHilst, but when I try to send him
email at cfa.harvard.edu it bounces back.Failing any of this I'm afraid I'll have to start taking a wack at the code
and try to figure it out myself (yuck). Thanks for any help or advice you can give,Jim Heasley
