Hello Alan, About laserwriters on the 386. At NOAO, we don't actually have
any laserwriters on the two 386's we have in house. The 7 laserwriters
we do have are hosted by a Sun-4/280, Sun-3/160 or a VAX 11/750. We
mostly use the TransScript software for accessing the laserwriters from
a Sun; the 11/750's use instead a csh script written here by Steve Grandi
and some extra fiddling in the /etc/printcap file. These printers are
available to NOAO computers over the ethernet with the lpr command. We can help you interface the laserwriter to IRAF once you have
it hooked up in UNIX. There is a section in the SUN-386 manuals about
using the SNAP facility to add a laserwriter; have you been through that?
I don't know if the custom technique we use on the 11/750 to access the
laserwriter will work for you on the 386. I'd recommend you read through
the SUN-386 documentation you have and then consult with a local systems
manager. We can help once the laserwriter is interfaced outside IRAF.
Sorry I can't be of more help, but with the limited resources of IRAF
site support, we have to limit ourselves to answering only IRAF specific
questions as much as possible.Suzanne
