Hi all,
I installed iraf through the Astroconda Channel on my Ubuntu 18.04 system and have already used it, so I know that iraf works. When I login to iraf, I get a message:
warning: missing external package definitions file (IRAF_EXTPKG).
I think this may be related to other issues I am having. What problems could this cause and is there any way I can fix this?

This issue was fixed recently after some correspondence with Gemini helpdesk. I believe the issue had something to do with python messing with how the post-install scripts were ran for IRAF external packages. I no longer get the warning and now my external packages show up thanks to a different help ticket I had with the Gemini people.

I have the same problem. Could you explain what you did? Do you have external packages (like stsdas) available to you now?

Sorry for the late reply, the notification got sent to spam. After my correspondence, the people at gemini help desk somehow fixed the issues with the install scripts, so I then reinstalled IRAF/PyRAF along with the external packages I needed (gemini) via astroconda.
The issue with the external packages was fixed with that. And I can now use the gemini external packages. I also believe that I have access to the stsdas packages. You could try opening a ticket with the Gemini Help Desk as this quote from my ticket with them explains:
"Sorry, I know what the problem is here and I need to update some package builds before it will work (as far as IRAF is concerned, I am the Astroconda people, since STScI is dropping support effort for it later this year)." - James from Gemini Help Desk.
So perhaps the package builds need to be updated again.
Hopefully you can get it figured out, good luck!
