I have been unable to open SDSS DR8 spectra in iraf. The tutorial given on the SDSS website http://iraf.noao.edu/ADASS/adass_proc/adass_95/hodgep/hodgep.html is too difficult for me to follow. Can anyone clarify this for me? Thank you so much, I am a beginner, let me know if you need anymore information from me.

A specific answer may depend on exactly which DR8 spectrum file you're dealing with (please post an example URL if possible), but you might start with the thread at

There is also a new SPTABLE package meant to deal with tabular spectra, but at the moment it doesn't contain a data definition for SDSS spectra (I can talk you through adding it). The instructions you mention are pretty ancient but might still work, having some sample data form you would help.
