This is actually a problem solved, but I wanted to share in case someone needs it.
Recently I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04 and installed IRAF v2.16.1. When using xgterm, after 10-30 seconds the system would freeze and I had no choice but to reboot every time. With xterm there was no problem.
The solution for me was to go here:
System Settings --\$this->_split2($m[0]) Software & Updates --\$this->_split2($m[0]) Additional Drivers
and switch from "Xorg X server" to the "NVIDIA binary driver". After a reboot there was no more freezing. Also I noticed a smoother movement of the mouse on the xgterm graphics window after that, so this really helped.
