Hi Fitz,
(I am just going to put all the stuff I think that needs to be discussed somehow here. Is this OK?)
The installation script adds .iraf/setup.(c)sh to the .bashrc and .cshrc, they invoke irafuser.sh, in this in turn sets CC to gcc (and some other variables).
This seems a bit weird to me, since it silently overwrites the CC etc. for this user even when he does something completely different. There are other C compilers he may want to use as default (like clang), and compilation could mysteriously fail after he tried to install IRAF.
Could you change that so that common environment variables are not set or overwritten by the IRAF installation?
